So what about being an internal auditor?

On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of having the Institute of Internal Audit come to our meeting. Personally, it was a great learning experience for me since I’ve only been exposed to external audit. Jeff Chadwick and Tong Jin started off their presentation by using Kahoot, a fun activity during midterms, for me to see how much I didn’t know (hopefully I’m not the only one)! While, our presenters were talking about collaboration and transformation, Jeff gave great advice that everyone, no matter what field they go into, should follow. “Learn to fail sooner. The sooner you fail, the quicker you’ll learn.” Being an intern, and in the business world for the first time, I couldn’t agree more. I’ve learned a lot of valuable information working, but one of the most important things is to ask questions and yeah, fail sooner. As an intern, your company knows that you don’t know everything and they are willing to help you along the way. If you don’t ask questions and understand where you are going wrong in the beginning, and you go on, it will affect the efficiency and effectiveness of your work later down the road. Asking questions and learning from your mistakes makes you successful, which I know all of us members will be!
From when we were younger to now, even six years ago up to today, technology has literally changed the world. There are things that have came out that no one probably could have ever imagined, and we still don’t know what is yet to come in our future. Jeff and and Tong discussed the basics of how emerging technology has affected the audit world. I learned that many companies use the cloud when performing an audit. In the industry I’m in, at my internship, we also use the cloud when performing audits. I thought that this was something that only they used, but it was cool to hear how other companies utilize the cloud and that I could relate to it. Overall, it was a great presentation and learning experience, and hopefully it influenced other members to want to look into and pursue a career in internal, and maybe even external audit.
